The Truth of War
Project description
For our project The Truth of War I have created a timeline, read a book called The Things They Carried, Did an interview, and written an essay. A challenge extension I have done is the Gulf of Tonkin Pre-Write. I did all the extra notes for the spicy pages.

The Things They Carried Socratic Seminar
The seminar in class was about the book The Things They carried. Something that I did well in the seminar was listening and connecting to the text. Another thing that I could improve on was talking more, I could’ve put more thought into the seminar by telling what I thought and felt. The nature in truth in war is never moral. This is what really stuck with me through-out writing how to tell a true war story. I have read that a true war story is never moral in How To Tell a True War Story.

The Storycorps Military Voices Initiative
Interviewing the veteran George U. While Interviewing George who is a very social Veteran. It gave us a lot more information about the war and who has also showed us pictures. The most exciting thing about conducting an interview is actually being there physically and mentally. Being there fully gives you no distractions and can see everyone and know what is going on. A challenging part is jumping into a new group last minute. It was actually really challenging because I wouldn’t know what questions we were going to ask and who we were going to interview. The truth of war that I really stuck with me from the interview is doing something or else it could happen to you. Just like George said “kill or be killed,” there was also another where he said “hunt or be hunted.” There were other things that he said just like this. In which it was really interesting, because it is true, it was war; you had to kill the other people or they were going to kill you.

Writing a True History of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident
Writing a timed-write essay for The Gulf of Tonkin Incident was to help us with our history thinking skills. We were given copies of the original leaked Gulf of Tonkin. We had to take notes through-out this packet. Something that I was able to do without struggle is sourcing and contextualizing the sources. It was easy to use contextualizing for the packet because most of the sources would have the dates expliciting written on them or were in the text. The date would also tell us if it were before or after the Maddox attack. One skill that was difficult for me to use was reading the silences. There were some things that were left out of the documents that I understood were missing but didn’t know how to put them into words. Another thing I could say that I have learned from using these skills is that we could look deeper without even trying too hard. Using the historical thinking skills made it much easier to find details and other things easier to find.Reading over the challenge extensions have helped a lot more with understanding the incident by giving more detail. If I were to read just the required documents it would have been too blunted to understand. So I would suggest extra reading if given any.

Take-Aways and Enduring Understandings
Something that really stuck with me through-out reading the book and interviewing a veteran. I think that a true war story is never moral. Another thing that sort of was eye opening was that you should have like an “oh” response to the story. A true war story is never moral is from the book The Things They Carried.

The Danger of a Single Story
To start off our project we read things fall apart and we had questions to answer along with the book. Then we also watched videos about Africa and on slam poems by people who explained the danger of a single story.
My biggest take away is to not go by single stories I want to go deeper or beyond the single story in order to recognize the situation of a problem.
I am most proud of the theme or the direction that I decided to take my story.

My biggest take away is to not go by single stories I want to go deeper or beyond the single story in order to recognise the situation of a problem.
I am most proud of the theme or the direction that I decided to take my story. The most challenging part is being absent then not having all three rounds of critique or refinement on my story because I felt that my story could have been better and stronger.
I chose my cover photo by the theme of the story because the main character in my story see’s the good in the bad and at one point saw the bad in what could possibly be bad. This is how I chose my title and picture. Something that I would like to change about my cover is to add a background but I ran into some troubles with the top layer of the pictures.
I have learned that imperialism can be important in some situations so that it could help shape or create history in a society. Imperialism can also be helpful when a country is failing and someone that thinks that they can help, helps.
