How I've Been Socialized
When I showed my niece how to play dead, I layed on the ground and stuck my tongue out and played dead. Then she started to do the same, then i started to laugh, and she realized it was funny then she started to laugh too. From the beginning of when we were born, we have been socialized in so many ways, it has been implicit and explicit ways of being socialized. It’s like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. I was both positively and negatively socialized because I am a girl. People try to socialize how they want you to be, how society wants you.
We are socialized by our family; my family teaches me how to clean and when I got older they taught me to cook. I am implicitly socialized when I take care of my nieces and nephews. Doing so teaches me how to take care of kids. I like taking care of kids, it is fun; LIke a time when they just make me laugh constantly. When my nephew says things that are very hilarious. When we are at home or traveling somewhere, my family has taught me how to drive, well everyone has to learn how to drive at some point, I personally like to drive. Family, I think your family are the first people to ever socialize you because you will be with them most of the time. At school, your friends will socialize you, teacher will socialize you. Everywhere we are being socialized all the time. Society negatively socializes us. For example, people say football is for boys when some girls may enjoy playing football. Just like in this youtube video, Brianna, Tiffany, and Josie, these three girls play football and didn’t think they would enjoy it “American Girls Join Boys Football Team.” YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 23 Sept. 2014. I think this is a positive way of being socialized because it sounds like the boys football team is accepting of the girls on the football team. When people would give you dirty looks or would say something offensive. Like when people call girls fat, whore, slut, etc. Words can hurt some people, these words can be taken seriously, in severe cases it has lead to suicide. “Should Females Be Allowed to Play Football?” The Premier Online Debate Website. N.p., n.d. Wec. 29 Sept. 2014. In this website there are a lot of negative things about how girls shouldn’t join football. They are very horrible things, there are things like ‘ they’re horrible at it.” These kinds of things make girls feel like they can’t be themselves because of people that say bad things about what they believe or what they like to do. When I am being socialized as a result of my gender, it has a negative and positive affect on me. Cleaning and cooking have a positive effect on me because it helps me in the future. When some people say girls aren’t suppose to play football it can have a negative affect because some girls might want to play football. The media makes magazines and commercials for makeup and clothes, diets, etc. Popular magazines such as “Vogue” advertise girls wearing alot of makeup. It makes girls think that they should be that way, or they should look a certain way. “Vogue Magazine: Celebrity Covers, Subscriptions, and More.” Vogue Magazine Celebrity Covers Subscriptions and More Vogue. N.p.,n.d. Web. 29 Sept. 2014. Girls will try to look like models because of media, girls and guys are socialized be media because of all kinds of advertisements it makes them feel like they need to be like society. Being socialized is bad. Being socialized by my gender has made me who I am and who I am not. I don’t like being socialized because I want to be myself and not like society. Being socialized has made me think that girls are suppose to be girly and perfect, but in reality nobody is perfect. “Be yourself because an original is worth more than a copy.” -unknown. I have heard this quote from someone. I think i have been socialized so much while growing up. I grew up kind of like a “tomboy” is what society calls it or maybe they mistake it for a girl trying to be a guy. When girls are being socialized they’re being socialized to how society want them to be. I have gotten use to being socialized negatively, positively, implicitly, and explicitly. I have gone blind to being socialized, but now i refuse to be socialized. Sometimes it may get me in trouble. I do not like being socialized because I don’t have to be like anyone else. When a caterpillar is breaking out of its cocoon, it is like someone breaking out of socialization. When it turns into a butterfly it is free from socialization. It has broken the cycle of socialization. This is how other girls and I are socialized. |
Mask Reflection
Socialization is the process of the beginning at first we are born into society not knowing what is out there because we are still very young. Then first socialization, when our parents first socialize us by telling us from the right and wrong. cultural and institutional socialization, in which we are socialized at school or in a church. Enforcement, when there is a good outcome and a bad outcome, like when you do something good you get a good outcome or when you do something bad you will get a bad outcome. results are when you do something bad and you will feel guilty or it will lead to something worse. Directions is when you either break out of the cycle of socialization or if you let the cycle continue. My mask represents how I’ve been socialized as a girl. My mask Shows a “Perfect” girl with make-up on. The “girl” symbol shows that it’s a girl. It shows that society wants you to look perfect and wear make-up. Society wants or thinks girls should wear make-up. The Crack on the mask show that the girl is breaking out of that socialization. She is breaking “The Cycle of Socialization.”
My essay tells about how I have been socialized as a female in todays society, I have been negatively and positively socialized explicitly and implicitly. Explicit meaning when people tell you straight up how to act and how not to act, implicit meaning as if someone to look at you in a mean way because of how you chose to dress today. My mask relates to my essay because I have painted a girl covered in makeup, a “perfect” girl, society wants girls to wear make-up. The cracks on the mask show how I, or other girls are breaking out of that socialization.
Our process was in steps, it seemed a lot more easier to work in sections. We wrote our thesis for what we were writing about like mine was “I have been socialized because I am a girl. We then started off with writing our three ”T,” Topic sentences. Next we moved on to our evidence sentences, we wrote 2 pieces of evidence for each of our paragraphs. Then we started to work on our analysis sentences, which are at the end of the paragraphs because it’s like an overview of our evidence. Then after we were done with writing all of these sentences we started to work on our introduction and our conclusion paragraphs.
I think i have improved a bit more on my writing skills. I really like being at this school because it is project based. I am proud of how I have improved on my writing skills. I would like to keep improving on my writing skills because I think it is important, because we will have to write resumes for jobs we want to get.
